Winter Egg Production?

chicken hen in a nesting box with a person collecting eggs |winter egg production If you have chickens you may have noticed that your winter egg production has dropped off. If you are experiencing this, it is probably because of two things, molt and/or the shortening daylight hours.

Wondering what you can do about winter egg production? An option to consider is suppling a light to simulate springtime daylight hours.  Simply hang a light bulb in your barn, or chicken coop.  Put the bulb on a timer and set it to come on at 6 a.m. and turn off at 10 p.m. Please make sure to keep your blub light away from any flammable materials. You should be back in the egg business within a few weeks!

You can also opt to NOT do this. You will still get eggs, just not nearly as many as you get during the warmer months.
