FDA Halts OTC Antibiotic Sales

FDA Halts Sale of OTC Antibiotics. Cattle being vaccinated.Previously the FDA passed the Veterinary Feed Directive (VFD), which will halt the over-the-counter antibiotic sales. 2023 marks the final phase of the VFD regulations. In June all over-the-counter antibiotics will be removed from sale. Over the last few years, we have seen the removal of various products, including water-soluble antibiotics and even feed granules.

One of the last products we are able to sell is boluses and injectable Penicillin. In the final portion of the VFD – these too will be discontinued by June 11th. In order to continue to purchase these products you will need to have an established veterinarian-client-patient relationship. This is where your veterinarian has seen you and your pet/livestock within the last year. While we understand that it is not easy to get livestock in to be seen yearly, it is important to have a strong relationship with your local veterinarian. This is especially true with the VFD regulations going into effect.

The main goal for the VFD regulations is to ensure that antibiotics are not being overused or used to treat ailments inappropriately. One of the biggest concerns facing animal and human health care is antibiotic resistant bacteria and super bugs. Hopefully VFD regulations can help prevent more superbugs from occurring, especially in our livestock animals.
