June Gardening Tips: How Does your Garden Grow?
It’s time for June gardening tips! We are starting to get into summer here in the Gulf Coast region of Texas, and our cooler weather plants are giving out, or have already quit. That is just part of gardening in our area. As the temperatures rise and the humidity settles in, it is time to shift gears and focus on crops that can handle the heat.
However, now is a great time to start okra, cantaloupe, eggplant, and several other heat loving plants. Summer field peas, sweet potatoes, watermelon, and more can do well when you plant them at the right time and give them the care they need. These crops thrive in our long, hot days and can keep your garden productive through the summer months.
The best time to get out in the garden to plant and harvest is early morning. You can beat the midday heat and humidity, and both you and your plants will have a much easier time. Early morning work also helps reduce stress on young plants as they get established.
Keep your plants from developing fungal infections. Water only in the mornings, giving them time to dry off before nightfall. Wet leaves overnight can invite problems, especially in our Gulf Coast climate.
