National Pecan Day

For National Pecan Day, someone holds a handful of pecans in their handsNational Pecan Day: In Texas we love our pecans so much, that they have actually become our state tree. Pecans are special to pretty anyone in Texas, whether you like to eat them in a pie, in a recipe or even straight out of the shell. There are so many interesting facts about Pecans, including that they are the only major tree nut that is truly native to the United States. Texas is the leading pecan grower, as pecans growing in over half of the state’s counties.

I personally love a good pecan pie, but honestly it is hard to beat just a plain, freshly cracked pecan every now and then. I think one of the best things about pecans is that they come in a wide variety of sizes and flavors, that way you can really figure out what will work best for a recipe, or what kind you like best.

Pecans are great because they taste great, but they are also great for you. Recently there were studies from the U.S Food and Drug Administration, that stated that consuming 1.5 ounces of nuts daily, including Pecans, may help reduce the risk of heart disease.
