November Gardening: Cool-Season Crops
Just because the thermometer is dropping doesn’t mean gardening is over! November is one of the best months for planting cool-season crops across much of Texas. Gardeners in the north can sow onions, garlic, spinach, and carrots, while southern regions can still get lettuce, kale, and radishes in the ground.
Add mulch around young plants to help regulate soil temperature and retain moisture. Leaves, pine straw, or shredded bark make great organic mulch options. Don’t forget to water during dry spells-fall gardens still need about an inch of moisture weekly.
Flower lovers can plant pansies, violas, and snapdragons now for bright color through winter. If you grow herbs, bring tender varieties like basil indoors before frost. Rosemary and thyme, on the other hand, thrive in Texas winters.
Finally, take time to amend garden beds with compost or manure to build fertility for spring planting. The Texas sun is gentler this time of year, making it perfect for outdoor work. November may be cooler, but the growing season isn’t done yet-your garden just needs a little southern TLC.
