Protecting Texas Livestock: Be Vigilant for Screwworms

Be Vigilant for Screwworms, like the yucky one pictured here! It resembles a grub worm but a more evil version!Be vigilant for Screwworms! Livestock producers in Texas face a new threat looming on the horizon. The New World screwworm is steadily marching—and flying—closer to our borders. While no cases have been reported within Texas yet, the latest confirmed cases have appeared just 70 miles from the border. We need to stay ahead of this pest to protect our herds.

The Texas Animal Health Commission urges all producers to remain highly vigilant. You must inspect your animals regularly and thoroughly. Pay close attention to any open wounds, scratches, or tick bites, as these are prime targets for infestation. It is especially critical to check the umbilical stumps on newborn livestock, as these vulnerable areas attract the flies that lay screw worm eggs.

Early detection stops the spread. If you see signs of infestation or unusual wound activity, you need to act immediately. We cannot afford to let this pest re-establish itself in our state.

Texas Screwworm updates:

While Texas still does not have any documented cases of New World Screw Worm, the United States  Department Of Agriculture is being very proactive.  There has been one recorded case of a horse that was imported from Argentine into Florida. The screw worms were detected by USDA officials while the horse was in quarantine. According to officials, there is no threat of further infection and spread from this animal.

Last month they released over 1,000,000 sterile screwworm flies to help combat this pest.  Hopefully these will breed with any screwworm fly that crosses into Texas. All resulting eggs will be sterile. We plan to stay on top of this and keep all of our customers informed. So, please check our future blog posts.
